My ongoing New York by Night Series of oil paintings were inspired by the romantic luminous paintings of the nineteenth century American painter, Albert Pinkham Ryder, and by the paintings of Cuban-New Yorker, Gustavo Ojeda, who painted the New York nightscape in the nineteen eighties. Inspired by the Ryder moonlit marines and the gritty transcendentalism of the New York paintings of Ojeda, I began the Manhattan by Moonlight Nocturnes drawn to the mystery and poetic beauty of this old sea port town, drawn to where radiance and darkness meet.
