Okay, not the poems as I'm still proofreading. But here below is my Acknowledgements page that I just put together regarding two extraordinary women who played a big role regarding my poetry. Hope you enjoy hearing about them.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS - From the forthcoming: House of Forgetfulness Poetry by Jacqueline Stigman
I am honored to thank Flo Kennedy, who sponsored a Manhattan Cable Arts Show where I was interviewed by poet Peter Chelnik who introduced me to Flo. Peter and I also both read some of our poems and were accompanied on the Djembe drum by Ad Augeri.
Flo Kennedy was the first African American woman lawyer in New York City, known as an outspoken civil rights activist and feminist and more. Also very kind hearted. Flo passed away in 2000 at the age of 84.
>>>I’ll be uploading the video soon to the poetry page on my site.<<<
I am also honored to thank Romanian Poet Nina Cassian, who I met when she had just taken asylum in the US from the dangers of being a writer in Romania at that time. A friend of hers was beaten to death and in his diary a few of her poems were found that would not have been approved by the government at that time. Given this horrible incident she decided to seek asylum and became a citizen in the US.
She passed away in 2014 at the age of 89. Leaving a legacy of 50 books of poetry and 20 others of history and children’s books.
I met her when she read with poet Andy Brummer at the Cornelia Street Café here in New York City. We stayed in touch and eventually we both read together at the same Cornelia Street Café. I read first, as I was a new poet. But when she was about to read her poems she began by saying, “Jacqueline Stigman is a true poet.” Wow!
The only better review of my poems I ever got was from my mom who read a selected group of my poems, and told me, “They explode my heart!”
Now I'll get back to proofing the poems! Hope you liked hearing about these great ladies. If you did please like and share!
